Basics:
Having your home ready for your new companion before you bring them home eases the transition for all. A crate, play pen, small collar, harness, leash, Toenail clippers, dog brush & comb, dog dish/water bowl and some toys are the basics needed for comfort. Our puppies fit comfortably in a 24 in crate to start. We kept our puppy play pen in the family room so the puppy was a part of family activities. Kong toys and ropes are our toys of choice due to their durability and safety. Chewy.com is a great place to preorder much of what you will need before you bring your new puppy home.
Kong toys are good-especially for extreme chewers. I buy the black balls in the bigger size.
Probiotics are good to have in hand. I sprinkle a little in their food at each meal, it will help with tummy upset and the stress of the new home. Canned pumpkin is also recommended for tummy upset, pure canned pumpkin with nothing else added. Do not use pumpkin pie mix. I like to make a mixture of Greek yogurt (no aspertane or fat free) pumpkin etc to hide worm medicine or just as a little treat. Freeze left overs in ice cube trays for a healthy snack. Remember to look at the deadly foods for dogs lists in the internet.
Shampoos and bathing: a lot of people like cowboy magic dog shampoo. I have used baby magic and various puppy shampoos for years. I have even made homemade conditioners from recipes on Pinterest. At times, I bathe weekly, if needed and never had issues, but if concerned, please consult your vet.

Picking Up Your Puppy: What to Pack in the Car
Bring a 20" crate or hold puppy in your lap. You may bring a baby blanket or stuffed animals to rub on mother to take home with you, so your puppy has a smell familiar to them during transition. Old towels or Clorox wipes also may be useful in case of accidents or car sickness. Trash bags. Puppy pads so your puppy does not touch the ground in rest areas if stop is needed. We also have Snuggle Puppies available to purchase.
Puppy Stage:
Be prepared to get up with your new puppy in the middle of the night. We free feed, but do pull the food and water around 8p.m. We do not leave any dog with a collar on in a crate due to potential choking hazard.
Puppy First Aid Kit:
Hydrogen Peroxide (to induce vomiting), Neosporin, and Benedryl. Many people items are safe for dogs, but check with your vet first. Our longtime veterinarian retired so we have since visited Lansing Veterinarian Hospital and Basehor Veterinary Clinic and ended up liking them both.
25 Years ago, I mentored with my long time veterinarian, Dr. Ringle, who taught me how to worm our dogs and puppies and how to properly administer vaccinations and later how to do dew claws and tail docking on our Yorkies. The risk of bringing in newborn puppies into the clinic was unnecessary if I was comfortable learning how to do the basics at home. When he was confident I was doing everything correctly, he told me not to bring the puppies in to him until their final check up and I have been practicing this since then. You will receive a detailed list with each puppy.

Please do not leave puppies collars on inside his or her crate. The best tags are slide on tags, such as from boomerang tags, tags that dangle can get caught and create a choking hazard.
